Iraq - Attack on oil pipes cause immediate price rise
Middle East News.Net Thursday 27th March, 2008
Over forty people have been killed in fighting between Iraqi security forces and Shiite militiamen.
The militiamen and four police officers were fighting in the town of Kut south of Baghdad.
Security officers in the region have said Iraqi forces retook several neighbourhoods in Kut which had fallen into the hands of Shiite militias.
In the southern city of Basra, a large-scale battle is still in progress between followers of the radical Shiite cleric Moqtada al-Sadr and Iraqi and US troops.
Today saboteurs blew up one of Iraq's two main oil pipelines in southern Iraq, cutting oil exports by around half a million barrels a day.
The price of a barrel of crude oil rose by more than a dollar to 107 dollars following news of the attack.

Great news! This is great for the planet
People this is just another incentive for us all to concentrate on alternative energy.. Oil costs society much more than $1000 a barrel when we factor in all the secondary costs including security and global warming! Lets all focus on spending our energy on alternative energy and leave the oil to stay under ground where it belongs. YEAHHH Alternative Energy is the answer, this is where the next fortune is for the smart business people on the planet

I can't agree more but for different reasons
Unregistered;74406: well done freedom fighters.make them licking the oil from sea, desert.make their oil stealing mission a failure so that they gets hurt.
Simply because you’re a stupid ignorant hateful piece of shit doesn’t mean you’re not right once in awhile!
The people who will be licking up anything in the streets though are the Arabs and Persians who offer nothing to the world but oil, stupidity, Islam the death cult, people like you, and ignorance.
Once America kicks the oil habit the rest of the world will follow once again and prosper from American innovation(as always) and huge oil proceeds will cease to fill the coffers of the Despotic tyrants in control of them.
If the oil companies had any sense they would produce biodiesel and ethonal from switch grass and algae A.S.A.P.
Once done ignorant savages such as yourself and the countries you live in will not only starve but further kill each other off in record numbers over petty things like food and water!
None of the countries in the Middle east can produce enough FOOD of on their own.
China will happily send you melamine tainted food, Cipro tainted seafood, and GMO grain supplies!
The US should simply go into hyperdrive as far as creating food goes and store the excess selling none of it to anyone but our closest allies.
Within a year half the globe would be starving well just the ones that hate America, you know people like well you!
Bring on $180.00 a barrel oil and $6.00 a gallon gas!
I look forward to the chaos and the meltdown it might just wake some people up!
Bring on the moronic policies of whatever idiot achieves the Presidency next and we will surely see Americans in mass wake up and take to the streets to demand change.
Hillery said she wants to nuke Iran she let it slip if Iran messes with Israel hell will rain down upon them.
Sounds like more of the same to me what was that about change?
I would bet money if Obama gains the nomination he will be parroting the same.
Change?
What the face and the talking points?
Health care?
You mean government controlled health care?
What has the US Government ever done right?
Oh by the way Unregistered;74406 I hope you get run over by a bus and the only one capable of saving you is a Jewish or American doctor.

Oil Soars to New Record, Nears $120
April 22, 2008 - Oil Closed Above $119 a Barrel as Supply Worries Persist
]
Gas and oil prices pushed further into record high territory Tuesday, with retail gas reaching a national average of $3.51 for the first time and crude nearing $120 as the dollar fell to a new low against the euro. At the pump, the national average price of a gallon of regular gas rose 0.8 cent Tuesday to $3.511, according to a survey of stations by AAA and the Oil Price Information Service. Prices for diesel — used to transport most food, industrial and commercial goods — also rose overnight to a new record of $4.204 a gallon.
Gas prices are nearly 66 cents higher than last year, when they peaked at a then-record of $3.23 in late May, and have prompted many analysts to raise their estimates of where gas is going to go. “I wouldn’t rule out the possibility that we could get to $4," said Antoine Halff, an analyst at Newedge USA LLC. Other analysts are less certain. Fred Rozell, retail pricing director at the Oil Price Information Service, thinks gas prices will rise only another 10 cents to 20 cents nationally. That would mean they would peak near $4.15 a gallon in California, where prices are typically highest, and around $3.50 in New Jersey, where they’re typically lowest.
Gas prices are rising for many reasons, including oil’s record run. Light, sweet crude for May delivery rose to a new trading record of $119.90 before retreating to settle up $1.89 at a record $119.37 a barrel on the New York Mercantile Exchange. Many investors see commodities such as oil as a hedge against inflation and a falling dollar. Also, a weaker greenback makes oil cheaper for investors overseas.

New Fuel Economy Rules Proposed
Tuesday, Apr. 22, 2008 (WASHINGTON) — The next generation of new cars and trucks will need to meet a fleet average of 31.6 miles per gallon by 2015, the Bush administration proposed Tuesday, seeking more fuel-efficient vehicles in the face of high gasoline prices and concerns over global warming.
]
Transportation Secretary Mary Peters outlined the plan on Earth Day, setting a schedule that was more aggressive than initially expected by the auto industry. It responds to a new energy law that requires new cars and trucks, taken as a collective average, to meet 35 mpg by 2020. “This proposal is going to help us all breathe a little easier by reducing carbon dioxide emissions from tailpipes, cutting fuel consumption and making driving a little more affordable," Peters said.
New cars and trucks will have to meet a fleet-wide average of 31.6 mpg by 2015, or about a 4.5 percent annual increase from 2011 to 2015. In 2015, passenger cars will need to achieve 35.7 mpg and trucks will need to reach 28.6 percent. The rules were designed to push companies to boost fuel efficiency across their entire lineup. Manufacturers will have different requirements for cars and trucks of different sizes based on vehicle sales. Collectively, the fleet of new vehicles will need to meet the rules.
Among individual manufacturers, passenger cars built in 2015 by General Motors will need to average 34.7 mpg, Ford’s cars will need to reach 35.5 mpg and Toyota’s cars will have to achieve 34.6 mpg. For light trucks, GM will need to reach 27.4 mpg by 2015, while Ford will have to average 28.8 mpg and Toyota will need to hit 28 mpg.
